BorgWarner Launches Next-Generation, Three-Stage Turbocharging System

This engine developed specifically for the BMW M Performance family supports M550d xDrive Sedan and M550d xDrive Touring, X5 M50d Touring, and X6 M50d. With a 3.0-liter BorgWarner 3-stage turbocharged system, the maximum output power is 280kW (381HP) and the maximum torque is 546Nm (546lb-ft), which not only provides unmatched performance, but also improves fuel economy.

BorgWarner's new turbocharged system includes two small BV45 high-pressure variable geometry turbochargers and a larger B2 low-pressure water-cooled turbocharger. The upgraded engine is equipped with an additional high-pressure turbocharger whose boosting capacity can reach a completely new level relative to the secondary booster system. The three-stage turbocharger can be activated at different engine speeds. The first high-pressure turbocharger can be started at a slightly higher engine speed than idle. As the speed increases, the larger low-pressure turbocharger gradually enters the start-up state. To further improve performance, the second high-pressure turbocharger and all three-stage turbochargers will work simultaneously. In order to achieve effective and efficient boost pressure, the exhaust flow and fresh air supply should be adjusted to the highest accuracy. Especially in the case of a high-pressure turbocharger running at high speed, the exhaust valve should be opened by a vacuum drive to avoid back pressure, while the flaps are activated pneumatically to precisely control the supply of fresh air. Indirect air cooling optimizes the temperature of the compressed air in the three-stage turbocharger, thereby increasing the engine's output power.


Compared to the BMW 740d 3.0L 6-cylinder diesel engine supported by the BorgWarner 2-stage turbocharger (R2S), the BMW M550dxDriveSedan equipped with the BorgWarner 3-year turbocharged system has increased its output power by almost 25% while fuel The economy has also increased by nearly 8%, reaching the Euro 6 emission standard. At the same time, compared to the output power of 75.2 kW per liter of the secondary turbocharger, the three-stage turbocharged diesel engine shows a great advantage, and the output power can reach 93.6 kW per liter.
