Chinese spallation neutron source target spectrometer successfully passed the process test
[China Instrument Network Instrument R&D] From March 10 to 13, the spallation neutron source target spectrometer and accelerator passed the process test organized by the Bureau of Condition Protection and Finance of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The project was highly evaluated by the acceptance team. The test group consisted of 29 experts from the China Institute of Atomic Energy, the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tsinghua University.

The spallation neutron source generates neutrons by accelerating protons colliding with metal tungsten targets. Because neutrons have no charge, they can penetrate substances more easily than other detection methods, thus detecting the microstructure and dynamic characteristics of the material. It is called "Super Microscope." Due to its difficulty in construction, only the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan currently own the device.
Using spallation neutron source technology, you can measure the microscopic condition of a material just like the biological DNA. In some cases, you can detect the "disorder" of a material and create a corresponding "prescription." The "neutron source" can take the microstructure of materials like X-rays, and can be widely used in aerospace and construction machinery.
The spallation neutron source in China is a major science and technology infrastructure that has been established in the National Twelfth Five-Year National Economic and Social Development Plan. In October 2011, the construction of a large-scale scientific installation of China's major spallation neutron source was started in Dalang Town, Dongguan City. This is the fourth source of spallation neutrons in the world after Britain, the United States, and Japan.
After years of hard work by researchers, in August 2017, the Chinese spallation neutron source built in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, successfully hit the neutron beam for the first time. At the beginning of November, the device completed the joint debugging of the first accelerator and the target station spectrometer, and the average power of the target beam reached 10 kilowatts, which met the requirements of acceptance indicators.
The acceptance of this project opened the door for the construction of the CSNS target station and the three spectrometers. According to the introduction, in 2018, the first phase of the spallation neutron source project will be completed. About 3 years later, 8 to 9 spectrometers will be built, and 20 spectrometers will be built in about five to six years.
