In 2006, WP29 revised a total of 76 ECE regulations, accounting for 61% of the total 125 ECE regulations. One of them is about uniform regulations for occupant protection in commercial vehicle cabins (ECE R29).

ECE R29 was enacted in 1974. The current version is a revised version of the 02 series that was approved in 1999. To further strengthen the safety of commercial vehicles, the WP29/GRSP (Passive Safety Working Group) is currently revamping the regulations and has established a special informal working group.

Proposed ECE R29 amendment

According to an expert from the National Automobile Standardization Technical Committee, for the protection of cab members, the accident pattern of commercial vehicles can be divided into single-vehicle accidents and collision accidents between vehicles, and thus there are different test methods. ECE R29 specifies the test methods for the front impact test, top strength test, and back strength test of commercial vehicle cabs, and proposes the requirements for the cab's living space and the connection strength between the cab and the vehicle. However, judging from the current situation, most European countries and commercial vehicle manufacturers do not completely adopt this standard, but adopt more stringent corporate standards. In order to unify the standards, European manufacturers proposed a revised plan for ECE R29 based on statistical analysis of accidents involving commercial vehicles.

It is reported that Russia has proposed an amendment to ECE R29 and will add different test methods to N1, N2 and N3 commercial vehicles. The 141st meeting of the WP29 to be held in March this year will review and vote on this.

China's cab safety standards are missing

“China has no uniform standard in the safety of commercial vehicle cabs. With the need for product management, technological advancement, and the need to improve international competitiveness, we cannot leave the standard in the missing state.” Experts tell the truth.

In the domestic market, there are a large number of manufacturers of cabs for commercial vehicle companies, and the technical levels are uneven. Some companies adopt backward manufacturing methods, adopt imitation methods in the structural design of the cab, and lead to cost savings in material selection. It is even more difficult to meet requirements in the anti-corrosion treatment of the cab.

Even some large companies that have the ability to produce their own cabs are mostly introducing foreign technologies or directly introducing molds. The self-developed parts are mostly concentrated in interiors, front faces, etc.

Experts said that in the safety performance of commercial vehicle cabs, there is a big gap between China and foreign advanced levels. For companies that want to export to Europe, the safety barriers are nowhere to be overcome, and entering Europe is a wishful thinking.
