The number of cylinders commonly used in automobile engines is 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 cylinders. Three-cylinder engines with a displacement of less than 1 liter are commonly used, and 1-2.5 liters are generally four-cylinder engines. Generally, a 3-litre engine is a 6-cylinder engine, a 4-litre engine is a 8-cylinder engine, and a 5.5-liter or higher engine is a 12-cylinder engine. In general, under the same cylinder diameter, the more the number of cylinders, the greater the displacement, the higher the power; Under the same displacement, the more the number of cylinders, the smaller the bore diameter, the speed can be increased to obtain a larger power. The most common types of engine arrangement and number of cylinders are: W-type 12-cylinder engine, V-type 12-cylinder engine, W-type 8-cylinder engine, V-type 8-cylinder engine, horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine, V-type 6-cylinder engine, inline 6 Cylinder engine, in-line 5-cylinder engine, in-line 4-cylinder engine and in-line 3-cylinder engine.



All the cylinders of the engine are arranged on the same plane, and the formation of a straight row is called an in-line engine. Taking the in-line four-cylinder engine as an example, there are two common marking methods. One is marked with "I", then the inline four-cylinder can be marked as "I4", and the other with the English Line as the beginning, can be marked as "Line4" or "L4".

In addition, some engine cylinders are arranged on two planes, and the two planes generate an angle with each other. The cylinders with a V-shaped arrangement will have three common angles of 60, 90, and 120 degrees, depending on the number of cylinders. Engines with an angle of 180 degrees have a separate name, called horizontally opposed engines.
